Philadelphia District Attorney race goes national with support for Krasner from Democracy for America, Our Revolution, and Color of Change PAC
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Philadelphia’s District Attorney election arrived on the national stage this week as the progressive grassroots group Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of civil rights lawyer Larry Krasner.
In backing Krasner, DFA joins Our Revolution, which evolved out of the Bernie Sanders campaign, and Color of Change PAC, the political action committee affiliated with the national civil rights advocacy group Color of Change. Both groups announced their support for Krasner on Thursday.
Their endorsements coincide with recent moves by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Trump administration to strip away criminal justice protections implemented by the Obama administration.
DFA has 11,391 members in Philadelphia and 62,584 across Pennsylvania. It has committed to investing $500,000 in progressive municipal candidates this cycle. Last year, the organization helped elect Kim Foxx as a state’s attorney in Illinois and Aramis Ayala as a state’s attorney in Florida. In Pennsylvania it helped elect Helen Gym to Philadelphia City Council and Kevin Dougherty to the Supreme Court.
“In Philadelphia, generations of families and neighborhoods have been destroyed by racist police practices and prosecutors who turn a blind eye to the abuses in the justice system,” said Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean. “Larry Krasner is Philadelphia’s best chance to change that. Across the country, prosecutors have for too long escaped true public accountability for their life and death responsibilities. Democracy for America’s members believe that must change, and one way we’re fighting to make that happen is by electing a thoughtful leader like Larry Krasner to be the next District Attorney of Philadelphia.”
“Criminal justice reform relies on grassroots efforts and cooperation with the state actors who decide what is or is not a crime and who will be or who won’t be heard,” said Our Revolution Executive Director Shannon Jackson. “Our Revolution is honored to endorse a candidate that’s been listening for the last 30 years: Lawrence Krasner.”
“The progress of criminal justice reform is decided locally,” Jackson added. “And for Philadelphia, it starts with a decision to vote for Lawrence Krasner.”
Color of Change PAC pledged to "engage hundreds of thousands of Philly voters" in an effort to reach every Black voter in the city. "Krasner has a clear track record of specializing in criminal defense and police brutality matters, representing activists including members of the Black Lives Matter movement and advocating for fair law enforcement treatment toward minority and poor communities," said the group.
“This is a national moment and a national movement for civil rights,” said Krasner. “When we revolutionize the criminal justice system in Philadelphia, it will ripple across America. It will start here.”
Krasner's campaign is already endorsed by local DFA affiliate Philly for Change and local Our Revolution affiliate Reclaim Philadelphia along with a broad range of powerful progressive organizations including AFSCME 1199C, Liberty City LGBT Democratic Club, Food & Water Action Fund, Pennsylvania Working Families Party, Pennsylvania Federation Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees (BMWED) - IBT, B.L.O.C. (Build, Lead, Organize, Campaign), and 215 People’s Alliance.
