PHILADELPHIA, PA – Today the Larry Krasner for DA campaign announced that UNITE HERE Locals 274 and 634 have endorsed Krasner as the Democratic nominee for District Attorney of Philadelphia. Local 274's executive board voted unanimously on Wednesday night to endorse Krasner for District Attorney, joining Local 634, which endorsed last week. An overwhelming majority of the 4500 workers represented by the two locals live in Philadelphia.
Local 274 represents hotel workers, food service workers at Philadelphia International Airport, and workers at Citizen's Bank Park, the Wells Fargo Center and Lincoln Financial Field. Earlene Bly, a housekeeper at the Wyndham Historic District and Local 274 executive board member, explained why she supports Krasner.
"When I see schools closing and prisons opening in my community, it's clear to me what this city is planning for my grandchildren,” Bly said. “We need a district attorney who understands the injustice of the current system who is also willing to fight to change it."
Local 634’s members are food service workers and student safety staff in the Philadelphia public schools.
"Working to feed and keep children safe in every public school in Philadelphia, Local 634 members see first hand what the school-to-prison pipeline means for our communities,” said Nicole Hunt, President of UNITE HERE Local 634. “As a mother of black sons, I know what a DA who is more concerned with convictions than justice means for lives of working people in Philadelphia. Local 634 is proud to endorse Larry Krasner to help us fix a broken system.”
“I am honored to stand with my brothers and sisters of UNITE HERE,” said Krasner. “These locals are at the forefront of the movement for justice not only in the workplace but in all parts of our lives.”
