With CCP and Temple on board, union support likely tops 25,000.
PGN, Philly SURJ, Political Revolution PAC also join endorsement stampede.
The Larry Krasner for District Attorney campaign today announced several new endorsements for the civil rights lawyer, including new backing from organized labor and by the Philadelphia Gay News.
These join a long list of dozens of local, state and national organizations, including labor unions representing a number of Philadelphia residents that likely tops 25,000.
“It’s not easy to calculate,” said a spokesperson for the campaign, “but by a show of hands Larry appears to have more labor support at this point than any other candidate can claim, and by a wide margin.”
In addition, Krasner has been endorsed by the Democratic ward organizations of wards 8, 10, 27, 42, and 50, as well as by former City Council member Marian Tasco, current Council members Maria Quiñones-Sánchez and Cherelle Parker, and State Representative Isabella Fitzgerald.
The Faculty and Staff Federation of Community College of Philadelphia (AFT L.2026) - AFL-CIO, representing over 1300 members, endorsed Krasner by unanimous vote of its Representative council, “because of his long-standing commitment to progressive reform of Philadelphia’s criminal justice system, and because Krasner’s demonstrated commitment to civil rights and equality aligns with CCP’s mission to provide affordable and quality educational options for all who may benefit.”
The Temple Association of University Professionals (AFT L.4531) - AFL-CIO announced its endorsement on May 4. TAUP Executive Committee member Max Avener commented, "At this point in time, criminal justice reform is incredibly important to undocumented students and faculty and to all in the Temple community who face the threat of unjust prosecution."
Philly SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) is a chapter of SURJ, a national organization that has been organizing white people for racial justice since 2008. The chapter’s posted endorsement reads in part: "Krasner has embodied SURJ's essential mission of showing up for racial justice through his decades-long career of defending the civil rights of all Philadelphians to exercise free speech and to have a fair trial."
Political Revolution PAC announced its endorsement of Larry Krasner last week. The Political Revolution PAC is an all volunteer, grassroots organization that supports progressive candidates, with a focus in state and local elections. Its founders also started Sanders for President, the single largest online community dedicated to Senator Sanders’s presidential bid. Executive Director Ian Boyd stated: “Larry Krasner has fought his entire life for civil rights and justice. It’s time for the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office to do the same.”
In its statement of endorsement on May 4, the Philadelphia Gay News said: “Krasner has both a solid record of progressive leadership and a solid vision for taking that work to the next level in the District Attorney’s Office. Krasner has been a strong ally to groups like Black Lives Matter, ACT UP and more, and it’s that commitment to community that we need in our city’s top law-enforcement agent.” Krasner is also endorsed by the Liberty City LGBT Democratic Club.
